Polygon Foundation CEO Sandeep Nailwal says 100 million POL tokens are ready to be permanently burned through a permissionless mechanism that the community can trigger.

Polygon Prepares to Permanently Burn 100 Million POL

Polygon Foundation Co-Founder and CEO Sandeep Nailwal says 100 million POL tokens are ready to be permanently removed from supply.

In a post published on X, Nailwal outlined a permissionless burn mechanism designed to allow any community member to trigger the approved 100 million POL burn.

At the time of the announcement, the burn contracts had been deployed on testnet and were awaiting final approval from the Polygon Security Council before moving to mainnet.

Once deployed, the initial burn could be executed by a member of the Polygon community. Additional community-triggered POL burns are expected to take place quarterly.

Where Will the Burned POL Come From?

The POL allocated for the burn was accumulated through Polygon network base fees.

Reports indicate that Polygon’s base-fee collector held approximately 121 million POL when the mechanism was announced. The initial 100 million POL burn would therefore remove most of the tokens accumulated in that collector.

The proposed burn represents approximately 1% of POL’s reported total supply. Future network base fees could continue accumulating for subsequent quarterly burns.

A Community-Triggered Token Burn

The permissionless design is one of the most notable aspects of Polygon’s announcement.

Instead of relying entirely on a centralized operator, the mechanism is intended to allow the Polygon community to initiate an approved POL burn directly after the contracts are deployed on mainnet.

A token burn permanently removes tokens from the available supply by sending them to an inaccessible address or executing an irreversible smart-contract function.

Token burns reduce supply, but they do not guarantee an increase in token price. Demand, adoption, network activity, liquidity, emissions, and wider market conditions remain important factors.

Sandeep Nailwal and Polygon

Sandeep Nailwal is the Co-Founder and CEO of the Polygon Foundation.

Polygon is a blockchain ecosystem focused on scalable infrastructure, payments, applications, and Ethereum-compatible technology. POL is the ecosystem token used across the Polygon network.

Nailwal also cited $24.5 million in Polygon revenue for 2026 year to date in his announcement. This number was presented by Nailwal and should not be treated as an independently audited financial result.
